We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Graeme Thomas back to West Lancashire to present awards to young people at our Top Awards event . Graeme is an Olympic and World Championship Rower and most recently ended a 45 year wait for Britain by winning Gold at the World cup Singe Sculler race in Lucerne Switzerland.
Graeme a former Cub Scout at 9th Fulwood shared his happy memories of times on camp at Waddecar, including his adventures during our International Red Rose Camp.
Graeme shared his career highs and lows explaining how his initial career aspirations of being a professional rugby player were cut short by his inability to kick the ball in a straight line. His passion for rowing developed at university and with an exceptionally long arm reach it turned out to be the ideal sport for him. Graeme was keen to point out that the skills for life such as resilience and perseverance are what have got him where he is today and he felt humbled to have heard about all the adventures and achievements of our Awardees.
Andrew Hobson said: “It’s truly inspirational to see Graeme want to be apart of West Lancs Scouts, sharing his share his insights around resilience and that never give up spirit. At Scouts, we’re the dream builders, the future makers, and the inspirers, helping create closer communities and build a stronger society.

Graeme is now back training at his base in Reading and we wish him lots of luck in his training for the next Olympics and look forward to welcoming him back soon.
