West Lancashire Scouts the other week appealed to local businesses, community groups and politicians to enable them to provide more vital #SkillsForLife with more volunteers, meeting spaces and facilities after new figures revealed that Scouts across the region is continuing to grow in every age group from Squirrels aged 4 and every youth section right up to 25 years old with Scout Network
So many children and young people are turning to the Scouts across the region that West Lancashire Scouts has an increasing number of young people on waiting lists wanting to join in.
Scouts changes lives. We want to give every young person in West Lancashire the opportunity to join our adventure. Research from Ofsted tells us that children are lacking basic skills and learning. It’s about promoting key skills like working together, communication, and language, as well as creativity and community awareness.
Every week we give over 10,000, 4–25-year-olds the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, the important speech, the tricky challenge, and the big dreams: the skills they need for life, supported by over 3,000 flexible volunteers.
Young Person, Emma Aggrey (18) said: “Scouts opened my eyes to a world of opportunities”.
Emma, who now volunteers with her local group was one of the original proposers of ‘Thank You Day’. Touched by the sacrifices that many have made during the pandemic and helped organise the UK wide ‘Thank You Day’ as a way of giving back and showing appreciation to unsung Covid heroes. Throughout lockdown Emma also delivered scores of sessions to children aged 6-8 years online via Zoom as a Beaver Scout Leader. She ran scavenger hunts and online camps.
At Scouts, we’re the dream builders, the future makers, and the inspirers, helping create closer communities and build a stronger society.
Lead Volunteer, Craig Dewar-Willox, said: ‘We have opened 60 sections in the past year to provide scouting for young people and we aim to open 100 more in the next year”.
“We currently have 700 young people desperate to join us and develop skills for life”.
There are plenty of roles available, you don’t have to be Bear Grylls, whatever skills you have we have a role for you – Volunteering at Scouts is a two-way street. It’s good for young people, and good for you too.
Everyone’s welcome here. All genders, races, and backgrounds. Regardless of your child’s physical ability – there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them. And we’ll help them find it.
Why we need help to make this work
