In the summer of 2022 we are looking to take a group of Explorers and Network members from West Lancashire Scouts to Africa to undertake a community project in an extremely disadvantaged area of Malawi. In Mangani, we will build an education centre to be used by all ages. We will also provide the participants with a life changing experience and a myriad of new skills. This is West Lancs’s most ambitious community project yet working in partnership with the Charity FOMO (Friends of Mulanje Orphans).
Where is this trip going to?
It is proposed that the trip will travel to Malawi, Mozambique or Zambia. The final location will be chosen by the leadership team prior to recruiting young people.
When will the trip be taking place?
The trip will begin in July 2022 following the end of the school year.
Who is eligible to apply for this trip?
Any member of West Lancashire Scouts who is 18 or above by the 01st April 2022 is eligible to apply as a leader for this trip.
Essential Skills and Qualities for all leaders of this trip
- Ability to form excellent working relationships with young people and adults.
- Willingness to work as part of a team.
- Skills to keep yourself, as well as others, healthy in a deprived environment.
- Resilience, especially when things are extremely challenging.
- The ability to lead on areas of the Africa 2022 programme.
- The capability and enthusiasm to support young people with their fundraising.
- A passion to be part of the Africa 2022 team!
Budgeting Skills – as a team, we will handle a significant amount of money, both in fees for the trip and in fundraising. We would welcome adults who have finance skills to this trip.
Catering – we will probably be cooking many meals ourselves in Africa, somebody who can work with our participants to ensure we have a delicious and varied menu would certainly be welcomed!
Construction – it is likely our project will involve the participants being involved in constructing something in Africa. It would be of benefit to have somebody who can pass these skills on to the participants.
Media – we would love to spread the news of this trip both internally and externally. It would be excellent to have somebody who could work in partnership with the young people on this trip to build a memorable and iconic brand.
Risk Management – there are many hazards in Africa. As a team, we will have to undertake rigorous and detailed risk assessments to reduce risk. Risk management skills are desirable for any trip.
How much commitment will this trip be?
This trip will undoubtedly be a very rewarding experience for both leaders and participants. To make this trip the best it can be, it will require adults to give up a number of evenings for planning and also a number of weekends for training. Leader’s attendance is required at all training events and planning meetings, but these will be scheduled around leader’s availability.
How much will this trip cost?
The total cost for this trip will not exceed £2,000. The final figure will be dependent on the trips budget and will be calculated in line with the Major Events Group’s Leader Fee Policy. Leaders will have the opportunity to seek financial support if they feel they need it from a variety of sources, including from the Scout Association’s Overseas Fund.
How many leaders are we looking to recruit?
We are looking to recruit just one leader. This vacancy has occurred following a leader dropping out due to a change in their personal circumstances.
